"THE
AUSTRALIAN LEGEND”
AMIR
EL SHAKLAN (Imported)
24.6.1979
- 16.7.2006
Sunday July 16th 2006 marked the sad end of
a very
significant era in Australian Arabian horse breeding history.
On this day, Peter and Vivienne Hall of Fairview Arabian
Stud made the painful decision to lay to rest the great stallion AMIR EL SHAKLAN.
He had celebrated his 27th birthday a few weeks earlier.
The story of AMIR EL SHAKLAN originates in Germany nearly
29 years ago.
In 1977 the mare SASCHA was purchased from the West German
government Stud known as the “Marbach State Stud”. She was sired by
the International Champion stallion SAHER, who in turn was sired by the NAZEER
son GHAZAL (Egypt), from the champion show mare SAHMET by HADBAN ENZAHI.
SASCHA was purchased with the specific intention of
breeding her to the outstanding colt EL SHAKLAN who was only a yearling at this
time.
In 1978 SASCHA was bred to the European Champion EL SHAKLAN,
but failed to become pregnant. Both EL SHAKLAN and SASCHA had been entered
in the International Arabian Show to be held at Ascot in England, and as fate
would have it, SASCHA was in season during the show.
EL SHAKLAN won his class at the show, and was named the
1978 International Champion Pure Arabian Stallion. Immediately after the
judging, at Royal Ascot, with both horses still wearing their International
Rosettes, EL SHAKLAN was successfully bred to SASCHA.
On 24th June 1979, SASCHA gave birth, in England, to the
resulting foal - an outstanding chestnut colt that was named AMIR EL SHAKLAN.
Both AMIR and his dam were imported by Fairview Arabian Stud and arrived in
Australia in February 1980. SASCHA was very thin, having given everything
she could to her foal at her own expense. Unfortunately SASCHA never
recovered, but AMIR looked fantastic.
AMIR EL SHAKLAN never looked back and he quickly attracted
a huge fan club. He won his first ‘A’ Class Supreme Championship in
1981 and went on to amass an enviable 23 Supreme Championships until he was
retired from the show ring in 1985, after he fractured the spine in his rump and
broke his tail.
In 1981 a breeder from the U.S.A. wrote:
“Fate has lent a hand in the creation of AMIR EL SHAKLAN
– he is exotic, exciting and incredibly beautiful. He represents the
essence of correct Arabian type and conformation. His future seems
pre-determined, as a show horse and future sire he should be supreme.”
These words have proved to be prophetic!
AMIR’s sire, EL SHAKLAN (bred in Germany) is acclaimed as
having been the most successful show and breeding stallion in Europe and without
doubt the EL SHAKLAN family has had more impact on modern Arabian horse breeding
world wide than any other.
AMIR EL SHAKLAN was an Australian Arabian sire and show
horse of great significance. His superb record in both fields speaks for
itself. He is currently Australia’s Leading Lifetime Sire of Purebred
Arabians with 374 registered progeny to his name as at June 2005 when the list
was compiled. He also has 20 registered Arabian derivative offspring.
The extended family of AMIR EL SHAKLAN in Australia is huge and his genetic
legacy will continue to exert an unrivalled influence in Australian show rings
and breeding farms.
AMIR’s record as a sire is not just one of quantity.
He was a sire of superb quality, consistently stamping his foals with his
elegance, presence, beauty and lovely temperament. The majority of his
progeny have been shown and most of them can lay claim to ‘A’ class
championships.
In total, AMIR has sired 16 horses that have been awarded
the title of Australian National Champion Arabian, or Reserve Champion.
His son, FAIRVIEW KLASSIQUE was judged 1993 Australian National Champion Arabian
Stallion before being exported to the U.S.A. where, in 1997, he was judged
U.S.A. National Champion Arabian Stallion.

SAREZIN and the Australian National Champion Arabian Mares for 2001, 2002 and
2006 – KARINKA, WINDELLA SILVER SENSATION (exported U.K.) and PSYNECIA SPA.
In a fitting tribute to her grandsire, the mare
WINDELLA SILVER SENSATION has just been named 2006 British National Champion
Mare and also Supreme British National Champion – a unanimous decision by 6
judges.
AMIR EL SHAKLAN was truly a ‘Genetic Masterpiece’
– an Arabian Horse in which all the pieces of perfection came together in a
uniquely beautiful form. He has greatly influenced today’s Arabian Horse
in Australia and he will continue to do so for many generations to come.
His legacy is an unparalleled gift to the future of the Arabian breed.
Fairview Arabian Stud has retained four mares sired
by AMIR EL SHAKLAN including the 1996 and 1997 Australian National Champion
Arabian Mares WINDELLA SILVER FASCINATION and WINDELLA SILVER SHADOW. In
addition the stud owns AMIR’s outstanding multi-champion son IBN AMIR EL
SHAKLAN.
AMIR EL SHAKLAN had a very large fan club and
regularly received letters, poems, birthday cards and has even been sent a
Valentine’s Day card. He had an extremely beautiful face and studies of
his head have been shown on the front covers of various magazines. He has
featured in many paintings, on calendars and in the television show, “Totally
Wild”. He is immortalized in a superb bronze of his head and neck,
sculptured by Mary Borain.
AMIR was laid to rest at 8.30
am on Sunday 16th July 2006. He is buried in front of his yard at
Fairview Arabian Stud and a garden has been established there. Within two weeks of his passing over
200
e-mails had been received by Fairview, plus countless phone calls and
cards offering condolences and sympathy from all over Australia and
overseas.
Peter and Vivienne Hall are
very touched by this heart-warming response to the passing of their
much-loved AMIR. They are very gratified to know that this
wonderful horse has touched the lives of so many people in Australia and
in other parts of the world in such a special way.

FAIRVIEW KLASSIQUE was foaled on 3rd December
1987. He is sired by AMIR EL SHAKLAN (imported) from KREOLUKA (imported)
by Silver Scenario (a son of Tornado by BASK). He was special from the
time he was born, always had attitude and charisma.
His Australian show record is as follows:-
1991 - Australian National
Reserve Futurity Champion
1992 - QLD Challenge Show Supreme Male Exhibit Judge
- Judith Forbis, USA
1992 - National Stud Show, Sydney - Supreme Male

FAIRVIEW KLASSIQUE was purchased by Quentin
Naylor and, in 1997, she exported him to the USA with great hopes and
expectations for a spectacular show career. Klassique did not disappoint
anyone.
His USA show record is:-
1997 - Ohio Buckeye Show -
Champion Stallion
and then
1997 - USA NATIONAL CHAMPION ARABIAN STALLION
To quote from the USA ARABIAN HORSE TIMES
Magazine
"Such a blending of legendary blood has resulted in the extremely
classical head and eyes, very high set neck, correct conformation and a high
rolling trot. A tall, masculine stallion, extreme in the Arabian
characteristics and charisma ... National Champion FAIRVIEW KLASSIQUE was the
favourite on 4 out of 5 judges cards at the U.S. Nationals in 1997. But,
more importantly, he was the crowd's favourite as well".
